Evaluating a novel biodegradable lattice structure for subtropical seagrass restoration

چکیده
While attention in coastal ecosystem restoration has increased over the last two decades, success rate of efforts remains relatively low. To increase rates, physical techniques often utilize supporting or protective materials to provide a stable surface for transplantation, and some cases reduce herbivory hydrodynamic disturbances. In this study, we evaluated effectiveness traditional (staples, burlap) novel (BESE- elements, biodegradable potato starch lattice) on growth transplanted Halodule wrightii seagrass. A first experiment revealed that seagrass planted both two-stacked BESE structure without planting holes four-stacked with had significantly higher shoot count blade length than holes, latter design losing all shortly after deployment as shoots could not float through structure. second experiment, lattice treatment (four-stacked holes) three times equal greater compared methods (staples burlap), likely due providing protection from activity. However, disturbances, possibly including activity (culminating Hurricane Irma), prevented long term illustrating importance stochastic abiotic factors success. Overall our study demonstrates using designs similar beds.

A Novel Structure for Optical Channel Drop Filter using Two-Dimensional Photonic Crystals with Square Lattice
In the present paper a novel structure for optical channel drop filter (CDF) based on photonic crystal ring resonator with circular core has been proposed. In order to design the proposed CDF, the plan wave expansion (PWE) method is applied for calculation of band structure and photonic band gap while the transmission characteristics of proposed CDF have been calculated using the finite differe...

متن کاملNocturnal fish utilization of a subtropical mangrove-seagrass ecotone
Several studies indicate that, during daylight hours, mangrove-lined shorelines can harbor high fish densities, with individuals presumably benefitting from reduced predation risk among the prop roots (e.g. Parrish 1989; Robertson & Blaber 1992; Laegdsgaard & Johnson 1995). Within mangrove shorelines, fish densities tend to be lower at night, as components of the assemblage disperse into adjace...
متن کاملNutrient and grazing influences on a subtropical seagrass community
Nutrient and grazing levels were manipulated in a 10 wk field experiment at 2 sites in a subtropical lagoon in Bermuda to evaluate their relative effects on the abundance and growth of the dominant seagrass and macroalgae. One site was eutrophic, the other mesotrophic to oligotrophc. Nutrients were added to the sediment-water interface using slow-release fertilizer, and the dominant herbivores ...
